Vehicle Impact Testing (VIT)
On-Board VIT
On-board VIT plays a vital role in verifying the passenger survivability ratings of a vehicle’s design. Redlake offers several state-of-the-art MotionXtra imaging systems engineered for tenacity. These ultra-rugged designs have proven resilient against high-impact g-forces during the most violent crash tests and rollovers. Utilizing rapid shutter speeds and high-resolution dynamics, the novel MotionXtra systems are adept at capturing the durability of a vehicle’s interior during collisions, from collapsing steering wheel columns to airbag inflations traveling between 150 and 200 miles-per-hour.
Redlake’s MotionXtra systems were developed in response to the demand for an increase in airbag deployment throughout vehicle interiors. Airbags tend to obscure the cameras’ view as they inflate; however, MotionXtra cameras can be bolted or strapped to the interior of a vehicle in hard-to-reach places do to their small, lightweight, cable-free designs, making it possible for them to “see” around bulky airbags. These high-tech systems also play a significant role in imaging the extremities of crash dummies and other hard-to-view interior details necessary for determining vehicle safety.
MotionXtra systems provide superior imaging capabilities for on-board VIT, including:
- Small size and weight: includes size and weight of head, as well as the overall size and weight of the system, such as heads, cables, and controllers
- High-speed and resolution for capturing the details of dummy movement and airbag deployment
- High sensitivity without large pixel size in order to successfully image at high-speeds with short exposure times in extreme environments while maintaining compatibility with modest-sized (2/3” c-mount) optics
- Rugged packaging for surviving high g-forces, etc., associated with on-board crash vehicles and sleds
- Easy synchronization capabilities
Redlake’s MotionXtra HG-TH and MotionXtra HG-SE camera systems are ideally suited to on-board VIT applications. Whereas both cameras offer superior performance above other system designs, the MotionXtra HG-TH surpasses the MotionXtra HG-SE with superior network synchronization capabilities and light sensitivity, while the less expensive MotionXtra HG-SE system provides better resolution in a stand-alone design.
