Vehicle Impact Testing (VIT)
Off-Board VIT
When it comes to determining the exact moment and location in which an unidentified error in a
vehicle’s design could cause harm or death to a passenger during an accident, Redlake’s MotionXtra cameras for off-board VIT provide the ultimate imaging solution. The simple synchronization and high-resolution capabilities of MotionXtra cameras allow VIT researchers to achieve universal views of vehicles during rollover, barrier, and car-to-car crash tests. Whether strapped to the outside of a car or utilized from a distance, the MotionXtra can be synchronized for achieving multiple crystal-clear 3D representations of a vehicle during collisions. They also provide valuable information for rating the quality and strength of a vehicle’s components, such as bumpers, windshields and windshield wipers, body panels, wheels and other parts.
MotionXtra systems provide novel imaging capabilities for off-board VIT, including:
- CMOS sensor for capturing super high-speed events
- Rapid electronic shutter prevents motion blur
- High-resolution for capturing finite details
- High-sensitivity without large pixel size in order to successfully image at high-speeds with short exposure times in extreme environments while maintaining compatibility with modest-sized (2/3” c-mount) optics
- Rugged packaging for surviving high g-forces, etc., associated with environment on-board crash vehicles and sleds
- Easy synchronization capabilities
- Small, light-weight MotionXtra systems (e.g., HG-SE and HG-TH) can be strapped directly onto a vehicle’s exterior
- Extreme light sensitivity
Whereas the rugged MotionXtra HG-SE and MotionXtra HG-LE systems are small and lightweight enough to be strapped to vehicle exteriors, the MotionXtra HG 100K is ideal for imaging crash tests from a distance under harsh environmental conditions. Named for its ability to withstand 100G impacts, this heavy, ultra-durable system offers top-notch imaging solutions, including outstanding resolution capabilities of 1504x1128 at 1,000 frames-per-second, compared to the MotionXtra HG-SE (1280x1128 at 500 fps) and MotionXtra HG-LE (752x1128 at 1,000 fps) systems.
The MotionXtra HG 100K also provides advanced precision synchronization for camera networks (±2.5µs), permitting simultaneous imaging from a multitude of angles. Redlake’s MotionXtra HG-SE and HG-LE, however, offer the best imaging solutions possible for capturing off-board images directly from an auto’s exterior. These stand-alone designs provide over-the-shoulder views of crash dummies as well as close-up views of side, posterior and frontal impacts of vehicle collisions from various angles. They are also tenacious enough to withstand high-impact crashes and vehicle rollovers.
